Best Button Maker Machine Reviews: Our Top 11 Picks! [2023]

Are you in the button making business? Do you enjoy having some unique and elegant buttons/badges? Then you should consider buying the best button maker machine.

But why would you want to purchase a button maker? Well, it’s either for business or other DIY projects. Whether you need one for business or your DIY projects, this is blog is dedicated to you.

But hey, these machines don’t only make buttons for clothes. Rather, they let you create personalized buttons and badges that can be used as rope ties, key holders, bottle openers, charities, political campaigns, and more.

So the other day, I visited a friend of mine that is passionate about fashion and personalized items. She wanted to start her own button making business and was looking for the best badge making machine.

She had asked her workmate about it, and the workmate suggested a specific model (I won’t specify it). But I had some doubt because I had never experienced it. Plus, the workmate didn’t have other options.

I advised my friend to take some time and do deep research before deciding to buy that specific machine. It also challenged me to research some of the top button makers on the market. And that is why I came up with this post.

I tested and researched ten different button makers, and I will be giving your my findings. By the way, this list is based on my own opinion and decision; you are free to choose the one that pleases you.

Since you may not find your ideal button making machine on my list, I will provide for you a buying guide that you can use for you to buy the perfect button maker that suits you.

It’s going to be a long ride, so fasten your seat-belt because we are taking off.

Things to Consider Before Buying Button Maker

This is my button maker buying blueprint that I followed when picking my top 10 machines. You can also use it to find your perfect button maker. You should keep in mind that there is no specifically best button maker for everyone.

There is an old proverb, “different strokes for different folks”. Products that claim otherwise often fail to live up to expectations. Take, for example, you are working on an embroidery project and looking to add some colorful buttons as a finishing touch. Thus, custom made buttons with imprinted designs will be a perfect match for your project.

But do you need to keep an industrial grade, heavy duty button maker around you for this job? Probably not, just a simple, portable machine will suffice.

On the other hand, if you’re looking for batch production, button makers with a wide variety of color options, pin parts, and mold sizes will serve you better.

That being said, you need to be able to understand your requirements and how to fulfill them. Here are the things you should look out for before you decide to buy a button maker.

Consider why you need the machine

Remember the first two questions I asked at the beginning of the article?

You don’t have to scroll back J. My point here is that you need to consider the purpose of buying the machine. If you want one for business, then you’ll need to go for the high-end units with top features. Nonetheless, if it is for your regular DIY projects, you can go with a simple (but high-quality) unit, which shouldn’t cost you much.

A high-end button maker can stay strong even after multiple usages. However, the simple button maker is not ideal for frequent use.

The construction of the machine

Once you decide why you need the machine, you’ll need to consider its construction. What material is it made of?

The material of the machine will determine its durability. For a button making machine, I prefer one made out of stainless steel or cast iron. Aluminum isn’t a bad option too.

When it comes to the slide plates, don’t go for anything less than metal. This adds its sturdiness and durability. The base can be acrylic, plastic or ABS. But if you can find a button maker completely made out of metal, you will be good to go.

What button sizes do you want to make?

This is another factor I considered. If you are in the fabric/clothes business, you should go for a machine that handles almost any button size. You can also find some buttons that are less than 1.5 inches or larger than 3 inches.

A good machine should have interchangeable molds that let you adjust the diameter of the button as you wish. I also found some button makers that can change the shape of the button. This should be the best machine if you want to handle a wide variety of buttons.

What type of cutter do you need?

A circle butter on the button making machine will allow you to cut the button to a specific shape that you want. This is not a must-have feature, but it is good to consider if you want your buttons designed with a unique round shape. If you want a machine with this feature, you’ll need to choose one with a separate cutter. This means that there are some that come without a cutter, and others will have an attached cutter.

User-friendliness

Does it make sense to have the ‘best machine’ when it takes forever to get started with it?

Absolutely not. Therefore, you need to find a button maker that will not give you a headache when you want to use it. It needs to be easy to assemble and use. If you are completely new to these machines, the manufacturer must offer an easy-to-understand set of instructions with it.

If you can find a machine with a warranty, it would be an added advantage. Plus, ensure that you choose a unit from a reputable brand and that you only buy what falls in your budget. Never spend more than what you had planned to spend.

So, these are the factors you need to keep in mind before you make your purchase. Now, let me walk you through my top 10 picks for the best badge makers on the market.

We are back to the high-end button machines that are perfect for the large-scale badge production. The design is also more complex than the previous item on our list.

This unit is made of cast iron construction, along with a stainless steel long handle, and a plastic base. The covers are clear for you to see your projects with ease. This one measures 18.5 by 13 by 11.4 inches and comes in heavier at almost 36 pounds. That weight might be too heavy for some users. But the good thing about this is that it makes the machine sturdy and durable too.

You can move the dies easily and accurately, thanks to the convenient slide base. Generally, you’ll enjoy a fast slide track operation. This one also delivers up to 300 pieces an hour, which is decent enough if you have a large production.

It handles 1.25-inch buttons, and the company offers 1000 circle button parts to get started with them. Yes, it might be a big machine that’s extra heavy, but it is still easy to use it. You’ll set it up with ease, and operating it is easy breezy too.

4. Fasttobuy Button Maker

Two things stand out as extremely important when looking for a button maker. Whether the machine is easy to use and if it works efficiently. With regard to the two factors, you’ll find the that the Fasttobuy Button Maker is excellent.

This product comes as a kit. In the package, you find 20 round photographic papers, 300 circular button pieces, a circle cutter, a badge mold, and the machine itself. Considering the price that the kit goes for, it is easy to see it is a budget-friendly model.

Besides, why go through the trouble of searching for these things individually while you could just get them all with this kit?

Apart from having a great price, the product offers you real value.

For starters, it is made of sturdy materials that enable it to work efficiently and last long. The machine has a solid body made of cast aluminum. The mold is made of stainless steel, so that it tolerates the pressing power without a hitch.

And the handle is made of steel, so that no matter how many times you push or pull, the part stays intact. Many of those that use this machine attest to the fact that if you treat it right, especially by keeping it away from water, it will last.

I also like how the handle has a rubberized part at the top. That gives you a comfortable grip so you don’t end up with swollen hands every time you use the gadget.

The circle cutter’s lever features spring action. That makes it super easy to press and make those buttons.

The only gripe I have about this unit is the instructions provided. For instance, they don’t tell you that the picture you put in the pin has to be smaller than the pin or else your designs will be cut.

Aside from that, it’s a great little button maker.

Highlighted features:

  • Made of high-quality materials.
  • Rubberized handle for a comfortable grip.
  • Spring action lever for easy operation.
  • Relatively easy to use.
  • Produces consistent results.

If you are the kind of person that values simplicity, this product will suit you perfectly. It is small, minimalistic, but still performs decently.

This little thing comes with a super small size, measuring 1.25 by seven by 4.25 inches, and only weighs 1 pound. In other words, even a kid can use this little machine. It is made of metal construction and seemed strong enough to last for a while. This is definitely the most portable button maker I came across (unless there is another machine smaller than this one).

The Badge-A-Minit Button maker handles the 2.25 inches buttons, thanks to the similar size diameter capacity. Besides the 2.25 diameter capacity, the button maker comes with an assembly rings set, as well as ten sets of pin-back buttons. I also found ten different ready-made designs, which can be helpful if you need some design inspirations.

It is a hand-press machine that won’t give you a hard time to use. The best part is that it comes ready to use. You just take it out of its packaging and start making your buttons. The number 10 is someone symbolic with this machine because you will get a whole lot of 10s. I also got ten mylar covers that are cut into circles. I presumed that they helped to protect the machine from dust and scratches.

This one can deliver 50 buttons an hour, which is not as fast as other units. Still, it is reliable enough if you are buying this for your DIY projects.

This little machine should be the right choice for you if you are getting started in the button making field.

They say looks can be deceiving, but the looks of this button maker are not deceitful at all. It looks impressive but also works decently. This is one product that combines both the 'beauty and the beast' features.

The button maker comes with cast iron construction that gives it its sturdiness. But that’s not all; it also features some stainless steel parts, like the long handle. The slide plate is made of metal, but the base is made of acrylic. The combination of these materials gives you a sturdy button machine that can withstand regular usage and resist corrosion.

This one measures 17.3 by 13.8 by 11.4 inches, and it comes in at 36.2 pounds. It’s also heavy and not the regular portable badge machine you’d find out there. But still, you can store it in a confined space without any problem. On average, this machine can deliver up to 300 buttons in an hour (I noticed this is the average rate for most badge makers out there).

The button maker handles the 2.25 inches buttons, but there is a 2.15inch cut paper that will work according to your needs. With this feature, you can get incredible results when working on low-volume productions. You will get 1000 sets of button parts to get started. I didn’t experience any hard time when getting started with this machine. After all, it comes with an easy-to-understand user instruction, which is an added advantage if you have limited knowledge in the field. I only had a problem with its handle; it is not cushioned like other handles.

This machine can handle any type of badge or button, including key chains, rope ties, bottle openers, pin buttons, and more.

8. Inex Life Badge Making Machine

Looking for a button maker for your kids? You want it to be super easy to use, and you want some guarantee that your young ones are safe using the machine, right?

In that case, I would encourage you to try the Inex Life Badge Making Machine.

Because first, there are no sharp edges that can hurt your little ones. The machine features a good design and the manufacture is excellent.

Secondly, the machine has smooth action. And, only a little pressure is needed to produce the buttons. Even kids have an easy time operating this model.

Sturdiness is another area where you will find the Inex Life Badge Making Machine excels. I have to say, I was impressed with how well-made this little beast is.

The framework appears to be die-cast aluminum, while the cutter and mold are cast iron. The handle is made of steel.

With such materials, you’re assured of longevity as long as you protect the unit from elements like moisture and dust.

The handle features a unique and clever design, which, I think, is what makes the operation so easy in the first place. It is a long handle made of steel. The length of it brings the effort needed to produce badges to a minimum.

And on top of that, the cutter lever has spring action, which reduces the effort needed even further. That is why so many people who want to get a button making machine for their kids get this one.

I have only one complaint about the Inex Life Badge Making Machine. The instructions are crap. They appear like they were poorly translated from another language. But don’t let that scare you. There are lots of helpful guides on YouTube.

Highlighted features:

  • Durable – made of cast iron, steel, and die-cast aluminum.
  • Long handle made of steel.
  • Extremely easy operation – suitable for kids.

Using Instruction Of Button Maker

Now, assuming you have finally found your ideal button, you will now have to start working with your new machine. Normally, the badge maker machine will come with user instructions, but sometimes those instructions are vague and not easy to understand. That is why I thought of giving you some instructions on how to use the badge making machine.

Tecre (a leading button maker brand) gives some detailed guide on how to handle different buttons with your machine. You can check out their post to learn more about that.

However, I will be giving you the general guidelines on how you can go about it and handle just about any badge maker out there. Here is how to go about it.

Step One: Set Up The Machine

The first thing you need to do is assemble the machine accordingly. The badge makers come with different designs, meaning that they will be assembled differently. However, most units will require you to assemble the stick and the grip to the main body. After that, you’ll need to screw the bolts to the base plate with the washers (the machine will normally come with two bolts to secure the base plate to the main body). The final step will be to set the bottom mold to the machine and finalize with the top mold.

After that, your button maker will be ready to work.

Step Two: Prepare Your Picture/Designs

Assuming you have your image or logo ready, you will need to print it on a normal paper. Here, you can use the circle cutter to cut the picture to the ideal size. Ensure that the size of the image/logo you cut is similar to that of the transparent film.

Step Three: Set the Moulds

The next thing to do is set the bottom mold on the machine, as well as the top mold. After this, you’ll need to put the badge metal cover into the top cover mold.

Step Four: Insert Picture

Once you place the badge metal cover, you’ll have to put the picture on the cover. By the way, the metal badge top should be placed in the left hand die in a circular slot. After that, cover it with the picture and one plastic film. Ensure that the printed side is up when placing the picture.

Step Five: Make the Badges/Add Pin

Here, you’ll need to press the handle down to transfer the picture to the button. To finalize, place the pinned back with the zigzag side facing up. Place it in the right-hand die and press down the handle to make the button complete. Ensure that no gap is left in the top die as you press down the handle.

And with that, your badge is ready. But you still need to follow the manufacturer’s instruction when you are assembling the machine.

Safety Issues That You Need To Take Cake While Working With Button Maker

Button making machines might seem simple and harmless to use, which is true. However, you need to be careful when handling these machines. That said, here are some useful care tips for a button maker machine.

  • Keep the small parts away from children. Tiny parts like 1-inch buttons and other small parts can choke the child.
  • Do not leave the machine unmanned if you have children around. The child can accidentally get hurt when they try pressing the machine.
  • Keep your fingers away from the dies. When you want to press the handle down, ensure that you keep your fingers away from the dies. Putting them too close can lead to an injury.
  • Always keep the button maker away from the edge of the desk. The button machine should not be kept near the edge of the desk lest it falls off and gets damaged.
  • Handle the pins with care to avoid being pricked during the button making process
  • Ensure that you use the right size of pins so that they don’t prick the wearer later.
  • In case you or anybody else is pricked by the pin, make sure you throw it away to avoid transmitting possible diseases.
  • Carry the button machine with both hands when moving it to avoid it falling and injuring your feet.
  • Do not stretch to take the machine if it is placed in a top shelf. Instead, us a ladder or a stool to take it safely. It might fall off and hit you on your head if you force taking it off the top shelf.

Generally, follow the normal safety tips you’d follow when handling any machine. Other than observing safety, you need to take good care of your button maker. Luckily, here is a helpful video by Tecre on the maintenance tips for a badge making machine.

Keep in mind that taking good care of your machine with proper maintenance will help it serve you for long without multiple failures.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: What do I need to get started?

For you to get started with the button making process, you will need a few must-have items. They include the badge maker machine, an item to cut the button graphics (cutter), and the necessary supplies. You can ask your supplier about these items before you buy. Buying the machine alone is not enough. Luckily, some machines come with a fitted cutter and ready to use.

Q: What is the ideal button size?

This depends on the industry that you are specializing in. Every industry will have a recommended size of button. For example, the political budges will normally come in round shape and vary in sizes of 1-inch and 2-inches and 2.25 inches. Conversely, the 3 inches buttons are the most popular and recommended in the photo industry. In the promotional and marketing industry, there is no limit, and the size will be based on what the client wants.

Q: How do I make a graphic image for the badges?

Here, you will need good graphics software, like Print Artists, which is a great pick to get started. It is not too expensive, and it is also easy to use. Other software includes Adobe Illustrator or CorelDraw. If you cannot design an image for your button, you can always hire someone to do it and pay them for the service. It won’t cost you much.

Q: Will I need to buy a special machine to make key holders, bottle openers, and such?

Absolutely not. The same button maker machine is designed to handle any item ranging from pin buttons, key chains, mirrors, magnets, and bottle openers. Ideally, choose the 58mm machine for you to make buttons for as many items as possible. But still, you will need to confirm if it can handle the different items all together.

Q: What do I do if the printed button design looks grainy?

First off, the button image will only look grainy and pixilated if you are using a low-quality image. When you are downloading an image from the internet, always ensure that it is a 300 DPI photo or better. This way, you will be sure of having an image that looks clear and sharp once you print it on the badge. Some badge maker graphic software will have an image analyzer. In this case, they will alert you whenever you try to upload a low-resolution image. Always ensure that you confirm the quality of an image before you upload it for printing.

Q: Can I use a machine from one brand and parts from another brand?

Yes, there is no problem using a badge machine from one manufacturer and parts from a different manufacturer. They will still work efficiently. However, some parts might not fit on a specific machine. In this case, you will be forced to buy the machine parts from the same manufacturer as the main unit.

This was very helpful thank you for all the info. I had a question regarding button supplies. My mophorn press came with plastic backs for the buttons, when I get more is it okay for me to switch to metal backs? Or should I stay with plastic because that’s what the machine came with?

Thanks again for all of your help
